Kavli Scholars

Deadline 15 Dec 2025 05:00 PM (PST)
Description

The Kavli Scholars program provides honorific grant support to exceptional scientists whose research for funding has been disrupted by unexpected challenges. The grant award offers recipients the opportunity to continue their work by providing funds for use at a Kavli-affiliated institution on a temporary basis, anywhere from 6 months to a maximum of 2 years. Scholars must be actively engaged in basic research in one of these four fields: astrophysics, nanoscience, neuroscience, or theoretical physics.

Scholars must be hosted by an individual or organization that is or has received funding from The Kavli Foundation and/or at a Kavli Institute. Selected Scholars may receive up to $100,000 per year for up to two years. The Kavli Foundation cannot assist with visas, and all administrative overhead will be the responsibility of the host organization.

The Kavli Foundation invites applications from Kavli affiliates (Kavli Institute members, Kavli Prize laureates, current recipients of Kavli Exploration Awards, or other affiliations) to nominate an individual who has experienced disruption in their work, or interruption of previously committed scholarship or grant funds, to be considered for a Kavli Scholar award. Nomination of scientists who are in the earlier stages of their professional careers (postdoc, junior faculty) is particularly encouraged.

A member or director of one of the twenty Kavli Institutes may nominate an eligible candidate during the open call, and reviews will be performed by The Kavli Foundation in cohorts.  While multiple individuals may be nominated from a single institution, an Institution may have no more than one active Kavli Scholar except under special circumstances.
